Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are an emerging battery technology with promising cost, safety, sustainability, and performance benefits when compared to lithium-ion batteries. They can use widely available and inexpensive raw materials and existing lithium-ion production methods, promising rapid scalability. Increasingly, SIB characteristics comparable to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries have been reported, suggesting that even automotive applications are possible. However, while China moves forward in their commercialisation of this beyond Li-ion technology, there are also some key disadvantages and uncertainties with SIBs that may limit deployment in some applications and regions. This presentation will introduce IDTechEx’s perspective on sodium-ion batteries, covering key technologies and market developments.
